چکیده
Abstract. Atmospheric blocking is a circulation pattern that describes the presence of large-scale, persistent anticyclones, which have potential to bring severe impacts at surface. However, dynamical behaviour blocks still not fully understood. For example, factors determine persistence events are clear. In this study, relationship between and smaller-scale transient anticyclonic eddies examined, with particular focus on impact transients block. Analysis performed in two areas: Euro-Atlantic North Pacific, locations both high frequency for impacts. Geopotential height anomalies 500 hPa used identify eddies. This allows Eulerian definition blocking, as well Lagrangian perspective It found experience northward acceleration prior entering block, indicative ridge building ahead block but could also potentially provide evidence previously proposed selective absorption mechanism maintenance. A general whereby longer interact more than less all times year. effect strongest winter weakest summer, agrees fact most least summer. strength eddy interacts measured by its maximum geopotential anomaly, has complicated persistence. The determining factor Pacific region. longest stronger shortest seasons except when reverse true. By contrast, only result from autumn winter. We therefore conclude number important persistence, having variable effect.

متن کاملAnticyclonic eddies are more productive than cyclonic eddies in subtropical gyres because of winter mixing
Mesoscale eddies are ubiquitous features of ocean circulation that modulate the supply of nutrients to the upper sunlit ocean, influencing the rates of carbon fixation and export. The popular eddy-pumping paradigm implies that nutrient fluxes are enhanced in cyclonic eddies because of upwelling inside the eddy, leading to higher phytoplankton production. We show that this view does not hold for...
متن کاملKey Drivers of Seasonal Plankton Dynamics in Cyclonic and Anticyclonic Eddies off East Australia
Mesoscale eddies in the south west Pacific region are prominent ocean features that represent distinctive environments for phytoplankton. Here, we examine the seasonal plankton dynamics associated with averaged cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies (CE and ACE, respectively) off eastern Australia. We do this through building seasonal climatologies of mixed layer depth (MLD) and surface chlorophyll-a...
متن کاملSegmentation and Tracking of Anticyclonic Eddies during a Submarine Volcanic Eruption Using Ocean Colour Imagery
The eruptive phase of a submarine volcano located 2 km away from the southern coast of El Hierro Island started on October 2011. This extraordinary event provoked a dramatic perturbation of the water column. In order to understand and quantify the environmental impacts caused, a regular multidisciplinary monitoring was carried out using remote sensing sensors. In this context, we performed the ...
متن کاملA census of oceanic anticyclonic eddies in the Gulf of Alaska
In the Gulf of Alaska (GOA), mesoscale eddies play an important role in promoting off-shelf transport of heat, nutrients and biological populations into the HNLC water of the northeast Pacific Ocean. However, the spatial and temporal distribution of these eddies and their characteristics have not been substantially described. Here we apply an objective method (Okubo–Weiss parameter) for identif...
